An awesome tool for you to group students - Flipgrid

Welcome to Kailin's ICT journey.

Nice to meet you here!πŸ˜€

I share my opinions and thoughts in my ICT journey Blog!

This blog talks about how to teach English via technology.

Hope you guys enjoy it! πŸ˜„

Before starting, I want to share a picture I took in Iceland!
This photo was taken while driving.

It is amazing, isn't it? πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

Let's explore a useful website for grouping students ~πŸ˜‰

This website is named Flipgrid
On this website, you can divide your students, classrooms or topics into different online groups.
And it is easy to access this website.
First, setting your account and create different groups. Second, there will be an invite code for your groups. Third, send your code to your students so that they can join your groups.

You and your students can film the videos and comment under the post in the topic group. This can help students see others' works and provide an interactive environment for them to practice speaking English.

Why is this technology relevant to language learning?

In the past, when students practised English speaking during class, they could only talk to the teacher or their classmates. However, it means the talk among students only shows once unless students record it. As time passed, this tool improved this situation. Now students can use this tool as a substitution for the recording which already exists. Students can record their communication through Flipgrid. It records their speaking practice and visual action, such as their face, how they speak and their behaviour.

What approaches to language learning or research underpin the use of this technology?

We can say Flipgrid is a practical tool that involves an augmentation function. Students can text comments from classmates' posts and teachers can create a chain story in groups. In addition, it provides opportunities for students to repeat their video and speaking practices. Students can watch their video and which reflects their speaking exercises.

How might you use it to foster language learning?

Flipgrid creates a shared place for students to post their practices and video stories to provide the modification function for students to interact with their classmates. Because after posting video stories, students can post comments below the stories, and posters could respond to them. Moreover, teachers can create different sorts of groups which depends on the topics. For instance, story groups, role-play groups and cooking groups. Students can choose one of the topics that they want to join and post their stories or assignments.

Target Audience

This tool redefinitions the traditional work's form, it allows teachers to create new tasks via different kinds of topics. If teachers can think of different work forms, students can be inspired by others' works. Based on that, this tool is for teacher who wants to create diverse topics from their courses.

What limitations can you see with the use of this technology?

This website is similar to other vocabulary-learning websites. I suggest it combines learning words via gaming so that it will be more attractive while learning. In addition, this tool is for learners to learn vocabulary, but it doesn’t provide sentence examples after practising word exercises. I think it is vital to show example sentences so students would know how to use the words in the sentence authentically.

This is the end of my blog. ✔

Thank you for reading here! πŸ™

I appreciated it a lot! πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

Let's watch a video about how to use Flipgrid as a teacher~ πŸ“Ί

  1. Hi, Kailin. Thanks for introducing this visual tool. I think the function of it really likes TikTok so I wonder is it necessary to use this platform instead of Tiktok?

    1. I think basically tiktok videos are visible to all users. Flipgrid is more private for individuals or groups?
