A tool for students to remember vocabulary - Memrise
Welcome to Kailin's ICT journey.
Nice to meet you here!π
I share my opinions and thoughts in my ICT journey Blog!
Hope you guys enjoy it! π
Let's explore a useful website for memorizing vocabulary words ~π
This website is named Memrise.
There are plenty of courses for you to share different level of vocabulary practices for students to learn and memorise.
And it is easy to access this website.
It shows how many people attend a course as well as how long it takes.
Why is this technology relevant to language learning?
This website is reasonably practical that learners can study nine different languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Russian. There are different types of topics. Taking English, for instance, you can learn vocabulary from other circumstances such as TOEFL, advanced English, Grammar, IELTS, and pronunciation. In addition, it provides different categories for learners to choose to learn in the target language and explore their knowledge—for example, languages, arts, math, the natural world, history, etc.
What approaches to language learning or research underpin the use of this technology?
The vocabulary exercises provide audio and visual stimuli. Interestingly, there are some virtual images or films when students learn a new language and vocabulary. Willis (1981) mentioned that video plays the role of visual aid compared to tedious texts. The images and the film in language practices could stimulate students' interest in learning as well as help them concentrate.
The courses show the time spent and the number of attendees. Learners can choose the topic or languages they are interested in. On the one hand, this website can record students' learning processes and history. On the other hand, there is a ranking board which ranges by week, month and all time so that they will get a sense of competitive by recording their learning history.
Moreover, teachers can create their own courses and select a teaching language from different language speakers. Also, you can make other groups on this website by your students’ English level or group students by various teaching topics and materials.
Target Audience
This tool is for teachers who want to create their own languages courses. Or for students who interested in learning different languages' words.
What limitations can you see with the use of this technology?
This website is similar to other vocabulary-learning websites. I suggest it combines learning words via gaming so that it will be more attractive while learning. In addition, this tool is for learners to learn vocabulary, but it doesn’t provide sentence examples after practising word exercises. I think it is vital to show example sentences so students would know how to use the words in the sentence authentically.
This is the end of my blog. ✔
Thank you for reading here! π
I appreciated it a lot! πππ

oh! This tool sounds interesting. I have a question, can this tool applied by teachers in classroom teaching? From my perspective, this tool is more suitable for students to learn words by themsleves. Or maybe used as exercises in class. How do you think of that?
ReplyDeleteYes, I mentioned how this tool applied by teachers in the section of how to foster language learning. And true, this tool is more suitable for students to learn by themselves. However, teachers also can use it in there class.
DeleteHi, Kailin. Thanks for introducing the useful tool for us. I'm curious is it possible to customize our needs according to different language proficiency?
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing another website on vocabulary learning! As a teacher I've often struggled about how to get my students to learn and remember words in a fun way, and I think I'll try out Memrise afterwards! But like you said, it's rather similar to other word learning platforms, so maybe there's something unique about it that you didn't mention?
