YouTube video, an authentic English teaching material - TubeQuizard

Welcome to Kailin's ICT journey.

Nice to meet you here!πŸ˜€

I share my opinions and thoughts in my ICT journey Blog!

This blog talks about how to teach English via technology.

Hope you guys enjoy it! πŸ˜„

Before starting, I want to share a picture I took in Iceland!
This photo was taken while driving.

This river is wonderful, isn't it? πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

Let's explore a useful website for training listening ~πŸ˜‰

This website is named TubeQuizard

It aims for learners to create interactive listening quizzes based on subtitled Youtube videos.

Learners can enjoy learning languages with video.

They can boost their listening and understanding of Youtube content and learn grammar and vocabulary.

Why is this technology relevant to language learning?

This website allows learners to boost their English listening skills by doing listening quizzes and watching Youtube videos. Through doing quizzes, learners not only can understand top frequency expressions and grammar but also can understand real life pronunciation of high frequency language. Also, learners can practice specific words, expressions and grammar structures by finding them in Youtube subtitles and quizzes of the videos.

What approaches to language learning or research underpin the use of this technology?

The quizzes made via Youtube videos are entertaining, which could create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to reduce students' second language anxiety. And a pleasant environment helps students raise motivation and stimulate their desire to participate in activities (Wagner and Urios-Aparisi, 2008). Practising exercises made by quizzes can alleviate students’ anxiety about learning the English language. In addition, the resources from it are authentic so that learners have ways to approach how real-life English is used.

How might you use it to foster language learning?

This website provides different English-level practices so that learners could watching videos and listening English for fun. Also, if the teacher shows this website to students who love watching Youtube videos, it would increase students’ motivation and autonomy. Eventually, more students would want to engage in it.

Moreover, it provides nine different categories. Students can decide which topic they are interested in and watch it. The teacher can choose suitable content for students to practice English in various types: grammar for listeners, pronunciation, vocabulary and spelling.

Target Audience

This tool is for teachers who want to use English videos as their language courses. Or for students interested in watching Youtube videos and learning English language words.

What limitations can you see with the use of this technology?

I think this website is quite valuable and practical for students to enhance their English listening skills. Importantly, it won ELTons Innovation Awards, which British Council made. But the one thing that Tubequizard can be improved is that it could show students' learning records and history.

This is the end of my blog. ✔

Thank you for reading here! πŸ™

I appreciated it a lot! πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

  2. Hi Kailin, I notice that you do not attach the resources of pictures. I think we should mark the resources to avoid any potential copyright infringement issues in our blogs. Hope you find this suggestion helpful. I enjou reading this blog and it is clear and well-organized. I want to recomment a tool called TED-Ed to you, which is similar toTubeQuizard. Both of them aim to make students enjoy language learning through watching videos. You can search for my blog to learn more details.
